The Pyrenees are dog country. The mountain passes, the forest trails, the high meadows, and the rushing streams seem designed for four legged explorers. Andorra, despite its reputation for shopping and skiing, remains at heart a rural mountain nation where dogs have worked alongside shepherds for centuries and continue to be part of daily life. Bringing your dog to Andorra opens up dimensions of the landscape that human only travel might miss: the joy of a dog splashing into a mountain stream, the companionship of a trail partner who never complains about the distance, and the conversations with locals who stop to greet your animal before they greet you. This guide covers everything needed to travel to Andorra with a dog, from documentation and accommodation to the best trails and the practical considerations that make the difference between a stressful trip and a memorable one.
Andorra as a dog friendly destination
Andorra welcomes dogs with a pragmatism that reflects its mountain heritage. This is not a country where dogs are treated as fashion accessories or where restaurants compete to offer gourmet pet menus. It is a country where dogs have always been part of daily life, working alongside shepherds, guarding property, and accompanying their owners on the trails and through the villages. The attitude toward dogs is practical rather than precious. They are expected to be well behaved, under control, and cleaned up after. In return, they are accepted in many places where more formalized pet cultures might restrict them.
The mountain environment is inherently dog friendly. The trails are the same paths that working dogs have traveled for centuries. The streams provide drinking water and cooling off points. The forests offer shade and stimulation. The high meadows invite running and exploration. A dog in the Pyrenees is in its element, engaging senses that urban environments suppress. The physical challenge of mountain terrain suits active dogs and tires them out in ways that city walks cannot. The result is a contented, exercised dog that sleeps deeply through the mountain evenings.
The limitations on dog access in Andorra are reasonable and clearly communicated. Dogs are not permitted inside Caldea or other spa facilities. They are restricted from some ski slopes and lifts during the winter season. They must be leashed in certain protected natural areas, particularly during the livestock grazing season. These restrictions protect both the animals and the environment, and they are enforced with common sense rather than rigidity. The areas where dogs are welcome far exceed the areas where they are not.
Entry requirements and documentation
Bringing a dog into Andorra requires compliance with European pet travel regulations. The principality, while not an EU member, applies EU pet passport rules for animals traveling from EU countries. Dogs must be microchipped with an ISO compliant microchip. They must be vaccinated against rabies, with the vaccination administered at least 21 days before travel. The rabies vaccination must be current and recorded in the pet passport or official veterinary certificate. These requirements apply to dogs entering Andorra from Spain and France as well as from other EU countries.
The EU pet passport, available from veterinarians in EU member states, is the most convenient documentation for dogs traveling from within the European Union. The passport records the microchip number, rabies vaccination history, and other relevant health information. Dogs from outside the EU may require additional documentation, including a veterinary certificate and possibly a rabies antibody titration test depending on the country of origin. Travelers bringing dogs from outside Europe should check the specific requirements well in advance of their trip, as the rabies antibody test requires a waiting period of three months from the date of sampling before travel is permitted.
Border checks for pets are not routine when crossing from Spain or France into Andorra, but documentation should be carried and available if requested. The pet passport or veterinary certificate, proof of microchipping, and current rabies vaccination are the essential documents. Carrying a copy of the dog's vaccination record and a recent photo provides additional backup. The requirements are the same regardless of whether the dog travels in the vehicle with you or on public transport. Compliance is straightforward for dogs that are already microchipped and rabies vaccinated, which should be the case for any dog traveling internationally.
Pet friendly accommodation
Pet friendly accommodation in Andorra has expanded significantly in recent years, though availability still requires research and advance booking. Hotels, apartments, and guesthouses that accept dogs are distributed across the country, with the best selection in the mountain villages and rural areas where the pet friendly tradition is longest established. The capital has fewer options, with many city center hotels restricting pets. The key to finding suitable accommodation is searching specifically for pet friendly properties and confirming the pet policy directly before booking.
Mountain refuges generally do not permit dogs inside the sleeping and dining areas, though dogs may be allowed outside on leashes. This restriction reflects the shared nature of refuge accommodation and the potential for conflict between dogs and other guests. Hikers traveling with dogs should plan day hikes or arrange alternative overnight accommodation. Some rural guesthouses and farm stays welcome dogs enthusiastically, with the owners often having dogs of their own. These properties provide the most comfortable pet friendly experience, with outdoor space for the dog to explore and hosts who understand canine needs.
Booking pet friendly accommodation requires clarity about expectations. The number and size of dogs should be stated at the time of booking. Any additional fees, pet deposits, or cleaning charges should be confirmed in advance. The accommodation's specific rules, such as whether dogs can be left alone in the room, whether they are permitted in dining areas, and whether there are restricted areas of the property, should be understood before arrival. A responsible dog owner who respects the property's rules contributes to the continued availability of pet friendly accommodation for future travelers.

Outdoor dining culture in Andorra makes many restaurants and cafes accessible to diners with dogs. Terraces and outdoor seating areas generally welcome well behaved dogs, with the expectation that the dog remains under control and does not disturb other diners. The mountain bordas, with their outdoor seating in summer and their rustic atmosphere year round, are particularly dog friendly. A dog lying quietly beside the table while its owner enjoys a meal is a common sight at Andorran mountain restaurants.
Indoor dining with dogs is less common but not impossible. Smaller cafes and informal restaurants may permit dogs inside, particularly in the villages where local norms are more relaxed. The capital's restaurants are less likely to allow dogs indoors, reflecting the more formal dining culture and higher customer density. Asking at the door before entering, with the dog visible and clearly under control, is the appropriate approach. A well behaved dog that lies quietly and does not beg or approach other tables is more likely to be welcomed than an excitable one.
Water for dogs is usually available at outdoor cafes and restaurants, either provided by the staff or accessible from public fountains in village squares. Carrying a collapsible water bowl ensures your dog can drink when needed, particularly on hot summer days when outdoor dining exposes dogs to sun and heat. The dog should be positioned where it does not block walkways or encroach on neighboring tables. A short leash attached to the table or chair keeps the dog secure while allowing the owner to eat with both hands.
Best dog friendly hiking trails
The hiking trails of Andorra are the greatest gift to traveling dogs. The network of over 60 marked routes provides endless variety, from gentle valley walks to challenging summit ascents. The key to successful dog hiking is matching the trail to the dog's fitness, the day's weather, and the seasonal conditions. A trail that is perfect for an active dog in cool autumn weather may be dangerously hot for the same dog in July. A route that suits a fit working breed may exhaust an older or smaller dog.
The Incles Valley walk leads the list of dog friendly trails. The flat valley floor, the river access for drinking and cooling, and the gradual gradient make it suitable for dogs of all ages and fitness levels. The track is wide enough that dogs can be kept on leash without blocking other walkers, and the valley's open character means that dogs can be seen at a distance. The river provides constant water access, reducing the amount that needs to be carried. The walk can be as long or short as the dog's energy allows, with the option to turn around at any point.
The Sorteny Natural Park trails offer more challenging hiking for fit dogs. The route to the Sorteny refuge climbs through forest and meadow, with streams along the way for water. The refuge itself provides a destination with views, and the surrounding meadows invite exploration. Dogs should be on leash in the botanical reserve areas to protect the fragile flora. The higher trails beyond the refuge, climbing toward the French border, provide more demanding terrain for dogs with the stamina for significant elevation gain. The park's streams and the cool mountain air make this a comfortable summer hiking destination for dogs.
The Tristaina Lakes circuit can be hiked with a fit dog, though the rocky upper sections may be hard on paw pads. The lakes provide water and cooling opportunities, and the cirque offers space for dogs to explore while remaining visible. The trail is popular, so dogs should be on leash when passing other hikers. The altitude and exposure mean that this hike is best attempted on cool days, with plenty of water carried for both human and canine hikers. The descent can be hard on a dog's joints, particularly larger breeds, so pacing should account for the dog's comfort on the way down as well as the way up.
Dogs on the slopes winter considerations
Winter presents specific challenges and opportunities for dogs in Andorra. The ski resorts generally do not permit dogs on the slopes or lifts during the ski season, for obvious safety reasons. A dog running loose on a ski slope is a hazard to itself and to skiers. However, the winter landscape offers alternatives that can be as enjoyable as summer hiking. Snowshoe trails welcome dogs, with the snow providing a soft surface that is gentler on joints than frozen ground. The winter forests are quiet and empty, with trails that wind through snow covered trees.
Winter walking with dogs requires attention to cold weather safety. Paw pads can be injured by ice crystals and frozen snow, and some dogs benefit from protective paw wax or booties. Short haired breeds may need coats or sweaters in cold conditions. The dog's tolerance for cold depends on breed, age, fitness, and acclimatization, with the owner being the best judge of when conditions are too severe. Snow can conceal hazards including ice over streams and sharp rocks, so known trails are safer than off trail exploration. After the walk, drying the dog thoroughly prevents chilling and the skin problems that can develop from damp fur.
Ski resort villages in winter are bustling environments where dogs need careful management. The crowded streets, the skiers carrying equipment, and the general busyness can stress dogs accustomed to quieter settings. Walking at less busy times, early morning or after the slopes close, provides a calmer experience. Some hotels offer dog sitting services for days when owners want to ski, though these should be arranged in advance. The winter visit with a dog works best when skiing is not the sole focus of the trip, with non ski days dedicated to shared winter activities with the dog.
Mountain safety for dogs
Mountain environments pose specific risks to dogs that urban and suburban settings do not. The elevation, the terrain, the wildlife, and the weather all require awareness and preparation. The most common canine mountain emergencies are paw injuries, heat exhaustion, and encounters with livestock or wildlife. Each is preventable through appropriate preparation and decision making.
Paw protection is essential for mountain hiking. The rocky trails that characterize high Pyrenean terrain can cut and abrade paw pads, particularly on dogs accustomed to grass and pavement. Building up paw toughness through gradual exposure to rougher surfaces before the trip helps prepare the dog. Checking paws regularly during hikes, removing debris from between toes, and watching for limping or favoring of feet catches problems early. Paw wax provides some protection, and booties offer more comprehensive coverage for dogs that will tolerate them. Carrying a basic canine first aid kit, including materials for bandaging a cut paw, allows treatment of minor injuries on the trail.
Heat management is critical during summer hiking. Dogs cool themselves primarily through panting, which is less efficient than human sweating. The combination of exercise, sun exposure, and rising temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion more quickly than many owners expect. Hiking in the early morning when temperatures are coolest, choosing shaded trails, taking frequent water breaks, and using streams and lakes for cooling all help manage heat. Signs of heat stress include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and unresponsiveness. A dog showing these signs needs immediate rest in shade with water, and if symptoms persist, a rapid descent and veterinary attention.
Livestock and wildlife encounters require careful management. The high pastures of Andorra are grazed by cattle, sheep, and horses during summer months. These animals, particularly cows with calves, can react aggressively to dogs. Keeping the dog on leash when passing through grazing areas prevents confrontations that could injure the dog, the livestock, and potentially the owner. Wildlife encounters with marmots, chamois, and wild boar are possible on mountain trails. A dog that chases wildlife can disappear into terrain from which it cannot return, can be injured by defensive animals, and can disturb species during critical breeding periods. The leash is the simplest solution, applied in areas where encounters are likely.
Dog friendly transport
Transport to and around Andorra with a dog requires planning. The direct buses from Barcelona and Toulouse airports generally do not permit dogs, with exceptions only for assistance animals. This limitation makes car travel the most practical option for reaching Andorra with a dog. Rental cars from Spanish and French airports can be used for the journey, with the dog secured in the vehicle. The drive takes approximately three hours from either airport, a manageable duration for most dogs with a rest stop along the way.
Within Andorra, the internal bus network has varying policies on dogs. Small dogs in carriers may be permitted on some services, while larger dogs are generally not allowed. The policy varies by bus company and route, and the safest assumption is that dogs are not permitted on public buses unless specifically confirmed otherwise. Taxis may accept dogs at the driver's discretion, with larger dogs more likely to be accepted when the owner can demonstrate that the dog is clean and well behaved. Calling ahead to book a taxi and mentioning the dog avoids waiting with an animal that the driver may not accept.
Car travel within Andorra is straightforward with a dog. The short distances between locations, rarely more than 30 to 45 minutes, prevent the long journeys that stress dogs in cars. Parking is available at trailheads, villages, and attractions. The dog should be secured in the vehicle, either in a crate or with a harness attached to a seatbelt, for safety in the event of sudden stops. Never leaving a dog in a parked car during warm weather is an absolute rule, the mountain sun heats vehicles rapidly even when outside temperatures are moderate.
Urban and village walks with dogs
The urban environment of Andorra la Vella is less dog friendly than the mountain trails but still offers walking opportunities for dogs that are comfortable in busier settings. The riverside paths along the Valira River provide green corridors through the capital, with grass areas and trees that soften the urban experience. Early morning walks before the shopping streets fill provide the calmest experience. The area around the Santa Coloma church, on the edge of the capital, offers open space with mountain views and fewer crowds.
The mountain villages are inherently dog friendly environments. Ordino, Pal, Llorts, and La Cortinada have streets that are quiet enough for relaxed dog walking, with the surrounding countryside accessible within minutes. The village squares provide rest stops where dogs can lie beside outdoor cafe tables. The rhythm of village life, slower and less crowded than the capital, suits dogs that find urban environments stressful. Village walks can be combined with the surrounding trails for a day that balances gentle exercise with more challenging hiking.
Leash norms in Andorran towns and villages are similar to those in Spain and France. Dogs should be on leash in built up areas, on roads, and in public spaces where other people are present. Off leash exercise is appropriate in open countryside and on trails, provided the dog is under voice control and does not approach other walkers or animals without permission. The owner is legally responsible for any damage or injury caused by their dog, regardless of circumstances. Cleaning up after the dog is both a legal requirement and a social expectation, with bags available from dispensers in some public areas and from any supermarket.
Veterinary services and emergencies
Veterinary care in Andorra is good, with clinics in Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany, La Massana, and other towns. The clinics provide routine care, vaccinations, and emergency treatment. Many vets speak Spanish, French, and some English. The standard of care is comparable to that in Spain and France, with modern equipment and trained professionals. Contact information for the nearest veterinary clinic should be saved before the trip, along with the emergency number 112 which can connect to veterinary emergency services.
The most common veterinary needs for traveling dogs are minor: paw injuries, digestive issues from dietary changes, and tick removal. Carrying a basic canine first aid kit allows treatment of minor issues without a vet visit. The kit should include bandages, antiseptic wipes, tick removal tool, and any regular medications the dog takes. For more serious issues, the veterinary clinics in the capital provide the most comprehensive care. The cost of veterinary treatment in Andorra is generally lower than in Switzerland or Scandinavia but comparable to Spain.
Pet insurance that covers veterinary treatment abroad is recommended for dogs traveling to Andorra. Standard pet insurance may not cover overseas treatment, so checking the policy before travel is essential. EU pet insurance generally covers treatment in Andorra, though the terms should be verified. The cost of emergency veterinary treatment without insurance can be significant, and the peace of mind that insurance provides is worth the premium for international travel. The insurance documents and the veterinary clinic contact information should be carried with the dog's other documentation.
Local norms and dog etiquette
Dog ownership culture in Andorra reflects the country's position between Spanish and French influences. Dogs are part of family life, commonly seen in villages and on trails, and generally well accepted in public spaces. The expectations for dog owners are the same as in most European countries: dogs should be under control, waste should be cleaned up, and aggressive or disruptive behavior is not tolerated. Meeting these expectations ensures that dogs continue to be welcome in the places that currently accept them.
Greeting customs around dogs differ from some other cultures. Andorrans, like Spaniards and French, may approach and interact with dogs more freely than northern Europeans expect. A stranger stopping to pat your dog and ask about its breed is normal social behavior, not an intrusion. The appropriate response is friendly engagement, assuming you are comfortable with the interaction. A dog that does not welcome strangers should be clearly identified as such, and the owner should proactively manage encounters to prevent problems.
Barking norms in the close quarters of mountain villages are strict. A dog that barks persistently, particularly at night, will generate complaints from neighbors. Accommodation that accepts dogs does so on the assumption that the dog will not disturb other guests. A dog that cannot be quiet when left alone should not be left alone. The owner who brings a dog into shared accommodation accepts responsibility for ensuring that the dog's behavior does not negatively affect other people's experience.
Packing list for dog travel
A comprehensive packing list prevents the stress of searching for dog supplies in an unfamiliar country. The essentials start with documentation: pet passport or veterinary certificate, vaccination records, microchip information, and insurance documents. Food for the duration of the trip, or a plan for purchasing the same brand in Andorran pet supply stores, prevents digestive upset from sudden diet changes. The dog's regular food may not be available in Andorran shops, so carrying sufficient supply is the safest approach.
Equipment for the dog includes leash, harness or collar with ID tag, collapsible water bowl, water bottle or hydration pack with sufficient capacity for both human and canine needs, poop bags, and a towel for drying after streams and rain. A canine first aid kit addresses minor issues. A familiar bed or blanket provides comfort in unfamiliar accommodation. Toys provide entertainment during downtime. For winter travel, paw wax or booties and a dog coat for short haired breeds. For summer travel, a cooling mat or vest can help manage heat.
Medications and preventatives should be addressed before travel. Tick and flea prevention appropriate for the Pyrenean environment should be applied before arrival. Any regular medications should be packed in sufficient quantity for the trip duration plus extra in case of delays. A basic canine first aid reference, either a small book or a downloaded resource on a phone, provides guidance for situations that may arise. The time invested in thorough packing pays off in a smoother trip with fewer emergency shopping expeditions.
Seasonal considerations for dogs
Spring hiking with dogs requires awareness of livestock. The transhumance brings sheep and cattle to the high pastures from June onward, and the presence of livestock means dogs must be on leash more consistently. The spring flowers are beautiful but some can cause allergic reactions in sensitive dogs, with excessive paw licking and skin irritation being signs. The melting snow leaves trails muddy and streams high, conditions that are manageable with appropriate paw care and drying after walks.
Summer is the season of heat management. Hiking in early morning, carrying ample water, using streams and lakes for cooling, and choosing shaded trails all help dogs cope with summer temperatures. The high altitude moderates temperatures compared to the lowlands, but the sun is intense and shade can be scarce above the tree line. Summer also brings the highest concentration of other trail users, requiring more frequent leashing and social management. The long daylight hours allow for evening walks when temperatures have cooled.
Autumn is perhaps the ideal season for hiking with dogs in Andorra. The temperatures are moderate, the trails are quieter, and the autumn colors create beautiful walking conditions. The livestock have largely descended from the high pastures by October, reducing leash requirements. The mushroom season brings foragers to the forests, and dogs should be prevented from eating wild mushrooms, some of which are toxic. The shorter days mean that walks should be timed to finish before darkness falls.
Winter demands the most preparation but rewards with empty trails and snow covered landscapes. The ski resorts are off limits to dogs on the slopes, but the snowshoe trails and winter walking routes provide alternatives. Cold weather gear for the dog, paw protection, and careful monitoring of the dog's comfort in low temperatures are essential. The short winter days mean that walks should start early to make the most of available light. The winter silence, the snow muffling all sound, creates a peaceful walking environment that dogs and owners can share.

Traveling with a dog changes the rhythm of a trip. The early starts for morning walks before the heat builds. The pauses at streams for drinking and cooling. The conversations with strangers who stop to greet your animal. The quiet companionship at the end of the day, the dog asleep beside you after hours on the trail. These are not inconveniences to be managed but experiences to be valued. The Pyrenees have been shaped by centuries of partnership between humans and dogs, the shepherds and their animals moving through the same landscapes you will explore together. Your dog will not know the history, but it will know the joy of mountain streams and high meadows, the scent of wild herbs on the breeze, and the satisfaction of a long downhill after a summit reached. That is enough. That is everything.
